The biopunk
regenerative scale

A simple framework for thinking about where a biopunk project sits on the path from linear (extractive, disposable, energy-hungry) to truly regenerative (closed-loop, living, self-sustaining). Five stages, not a hierarchy — every project starts somewhere.

1 — Proof of concept

Demonstrates that a biological alternative is possible. Still relies heavily on conventional materials, off-the-shelf electronics, and linear supply chains. The biology works, but everything around it is standard industrial.

e.g. "We got algae to glow using speakers and an Arduino."

2 — Functional alternative

Works well enough to demonstrate a biopunk alternative to a conventional system (e.g. an LCD, a chemical light source). Still uses a lot of linear resources — manufactured frames, mains power, shipped components — but the core function is biological. Knowledge is documented and shareable.

3 — Reduced dependency

Actively replacing linear inputs with local, renewable, or biological ones. Solar-powered, locally fabricated frames, self-sustaining culture cycles, reduced or eliminated reliance on shipped components. The supply chain is getting shorter.

e.g. Solar-powered array with locally grown cultures and reclaimed materials.

4 — Circular

Most inputs are renewable, biological, or reclaimed. Waste from one part of the system feeds another. Culture media is recycled. Electronics are minimal, repairable, and powered renewably. The project could sustain itself in a steady state with minimal external inputs.

e.g. Algae fed on nutrient loops from composting, powered by local solar, housed in bio-based materials.

5 — Regenerative

The system gives back more than it takes. The organisms are thriving, not just surviving. The project improves its local ecology — cleaner water, carbon fixation, nutrient cycling. Fully self-sustaining, reproducible from local materials and local biology. The technology disappears into the living system.

e.g. A living installation that cleans its own water, feeds its own cultures, and runs indefinitely.
